According to myhology, the first lyre was made by the God Hermes and was a gift to the God Apollo so that he could forgive him for stealing his oxen.
It was consisted of a turtle shell and strings of animals entrails. In classical Greek and Roman antiquity it was accompanied by the recitation of verses ( or rather the verses were accompanied by the playing of the lyre).
